Islands of the Pacific Northwest Coast

Ivan Filippovich Vasiliev (born 1776, died July 1812) was a brave Russian explorer and navigator. He worked for the Imperial Russian Navy, which was Russia's main navy at the time. Sometimes, people called him "Ivan Vasiliev the First." This helped tell him apart from other explorers with the same name. In 1806, he sailed with Leonty Andrianovich Hagemeister on a ship called the Neva. Their mission was to explore the coasts of Alaska and the northern Pacific Ocean.

Exploring Alaska's Coasts

Ivan Vasiliev spent time exploring the beautiful Alexander Archipelago. This is a large group of islands along the coast. He also explored many other islands in that area. In 1809, he carefully mapped the western side of Baranof Island.

Who Was Ivan Vasiliev?

It can be a bit confusing because there were other famous Russian explorers named Vasiliev! It is important not to mix up Ivan Filippovich Vasiliev with:

  • Mikhail Vasilyev (1770–1847)
  • Ivan Yakovlevich Vasiliev (1797 - died after 1838)

A Lost Treasure of Maps

A famous explorer named Adam Johann von Krusenstern once wrote about Ivan Filippovich Vasiliev. Krusenstern said it was very sad that Vasiliev's important maps and notes were lost.

Vasiliev worked for a company in America. He was very good at his job and loved exploring. While he was in the Russian colonies in America, he mapped all of the Aleutian Islands. He did this even though he wasn't specifically told to! Sadly, he drowned in Okhotsk harbor in Russia. This happened on his way home from America. No one knows what happened to his valuable maps and drawings.

Why His Name is Remembered

In the United States, Ivan F. Vasiliev's name is often spelled "Vasilief." He is also known as "Ivan Vasiliev the First." This helps people tell him apart from other Russian sailors and explorers who also had the name "Vasiliev" and explored Alaska.

Some places in Alaska are named after him:

  • Vasilief Bank is a shallow area near Sitka.
  • Vasilief Rock is a rock formation near Kodiak Island.

There are other places along the coast of Alaska and in the Aleutian Islands that also have the name "Vasilief." However, it is not always clear which "Vasiliev" they were named after.
