About Izegem
Izegem is known by a few nicknames. People sometimes call it pekkerstad, borstelstad, or schoenenstad. These names come from its history. The city used to be famous for making shoes and brushes.
The Mandel River and the canal Roeselare–Leie flow through the city. Today, there are only a few factories left from the old days. But Izegem has a special museum. It shows the history of shoe-making and brush-making.
Before the 1920s, Izegem was often spelled Iseghem. You can find this older spelling on old documents. These include passport applications and birth records. The family name Van Iseghem originally came from this city.
