Jörg Stübner (born July 23, 1965 – died June 24, 2019) was a talented German professional footballer. He played as a Midfielder and was known for his skills on the field. Jörg proudly represented the East Germany national team in 47 international games.

Early Football Days
Jörg Stübner started his football journey in 1973 with BSG Motor Halle. In 1979, he made a big move to Dynamo Dresden, a team he truly loved. Fans and teammates affectionately called him "Stübs." He played 182 league games for Dynamo Dresden and scored 14 goals.
Winning with Dynamo Dresden
With Dynamo Dresden, Jörg achieved great success. He helped his team win the DDR-Oberliga championship twice, in 1989 and 1990. They also won the FDGB-Pokal (a cup competition) three times, in 1984, 1985, and 1990.
In the 1988–89 season, Dynamo Dresden reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup. This was a big achievement for the team. Overall, Jörg played in 29 European matches for the club, scoring two goals.
Youth Achievements and Tournaments
During his youth, Jörg Stübner won the East Germany Student championship in 1978–79 with Dynamo Dresden. They beat BFC Dynamo 5–0 in the final.
In July 1979, he took part in the VII. Kinder- und Jugendspartakiade in Berlin. This was a special sports event for children and young people. Many future football stars, like Ulf Kirsten, also participated. Jörg played as a center forward in the final. His only goal in the match helped Dynamo Dresden win the gold medal. He also earned a silver medal in the Junior championship in 1982–83.
Jörg also played for the East Germany Junior team. He took part in the 1982 UEFA European Under-16 Championship. During this time, he became known more as a midfielder than a forward.
Professional Career Highlights
Jörg Stübner made his first appearance in the DDR-Oberliga during the 1983–84 season. He played a full 90 minutes in a 1–1 draw against Chemie Leipzig.
Scoring in Cup Finals
Jörg was a key player in important matches. In the 1984 FDGB-Pokal final, he scored a crucial goal that gave Dynamo Dresden a 2–1 lead. His team went on to win their seventh cup title. In 1990, he scored again in the FDGB-Pokal final. This victory helped Dynamo Dresden win both the league and the cup in the same year, a special achievement called "the double."
European Matches
Jörg's first European match was against Malmö FF in the 1984–85 European Cup Winners' Cup. Two weeks later, he scored his first European goal, helping Dynamo Dresden win 4–1. He played a total of 29 European games, facing strong teams like KFC Uerdingen 05, VfB Stuttgart, and Crvena zvezda.
Playing for East Germany
Jörg Stübner played 47 games for the East Germany national team. This makes him one of the most capped players in East German football history.
International Debut and Key Games
He made his international debut on November 17, 1984, in a World Cup qualification match against Luxembourg. A memorable game was on September 11, 1985, when East Germany played France. Jörg, wearing number 6, played a fantastic game. East Germany celebrated a 2–1 victory over the European champions.
His final game for East Germany was on September 12, 1990. It was a 2–0 win against Belgium in Brussels. This was the very last game ever played by the East Germany national team. Besides friendly matches, Jörg also played in 12 FIFA World Cup and 5 UEFA European Championship qualifying games. He scored one goal for his country in a friendly draw against Bulgaria in 1988.
After Dynamo Dresden
After the political changes in Germany, Dynamo Dresden faced financial challenges. Jörg Stübner, like many players, had to find new teams.
He played five Bundesliga matches with Dynamo Dresden. As a defensive midfielder, he played 249 matches in total for the club, scoring 24 goals. From 1993, he played for other clubs like FC Sachsen Leipzig, 1. FC Neubrandenburg 04, VfL Pirna-Copitz, and VfB Sangerhausen. He never played for the unified Germany national team.
Last Goal and Legacy
In November 2003, during Ulf Kirsten's special farewell match at Dresden's Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion, Jörg Stübner scored his last goal in the stadium where he spent so much of his career.
Many friends and football fans were sad to hear of his passing. Jörg was often seen at Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion, cheering for Dynamo Dresden at their home matches. Ulf Kirsten shared his sadness, saying that Jörg's story had touched many fans.
