J-Milla, also known as J-MILLA, is an Aboriginal Australian hip hop artist. His real name is Jacob Nichaloff. He was born in Darwin in the Northern Territory.

Early Life and School

J-Milla was born in Darwin. He is from the Marranunggu people, who live near the Litchfield National Park in the Northern Territory. He grew up in Darwin and started rapping when he was 11 years old. When he was 12, he moved to Adelaide, South Australia, to go to Scotch College.

Music Career

J-Milla began sharing his rap videos on social media when he was about 18. This helped him gain many followers.

His first song, "My People", came out in 2018.

In 2020, J-Milla promised to give the money from his song "Unlock the System" to the family of Kumanjayi Walker, an Aboriginal man who passed away during an arrest attempt. The ABC radio station Triple J strongly supported this song. In November 2020, he performed at the TREATY festival during NAIDOC Week in Adelaide. He performed with other artists like Dem Mob and MLRN x RKM. He also shared the job of MC (host) with actor Natasha Wanganeen. J-Milla was chosen to be part of TikTok's online music festival that year.

He performed at the closing event of the Adelaide Festival in March 2021. This event was called "Hip Hop Finale". He shared the stage with Ziggy Ramo, JK-47, and Jimblah.

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, J-Milla will perform at the After Race Concert for the Adelaide 500 motor racing event in Adelaide. This will be his biggest show yet. He plans to share new songs that have not been released before. Other artists performing that night include Crowded House and Meg Mac.

Some of J-Milla's music talks about important issues affecting Aboriginal Australians. These include intergenerational trauma, which means the lasting effects of past hardships, and reconciliation, which is about making things right between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

Other Important Work

J-Milla also works with Aboriginal children in faraway communities. He teaches them how to write songs in schools. He helps these children use music to express their feelings. He also leads workshops about domestic violence and mental health.
