JaMarcus Shephard's Coaching Journey
JaMarcus Shephard didn't start his career coaching college football right away. He first worked for the NCAA's Education Services Division. This job helped him have a steady income.
Early Coaching Days
In 2005, he coached high school football at his old school, Northrop High School. He was the wide receivers coach there. The next year, he joined Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis. At Broad Ripple, he coached both wide receivers and defensive backs. He also spent some time helping out at DePauw University. He was a volunteer assistant for their track and field team.
Coaching at Western Kentucky
After working for four years at a sports organization, Shephard decided to try college coaching. He took a volunteer coaching job at Western Kentucky University. He worked for coach Willie Taggart.
When Taggart left, Shephard stayed at Western Kentucky. He worked under new coach Bobby Petrino. His job was to help the team's offense change. They wanted to pass the ball more instead of just running it. In 2014, he became the wide receivers coach. This was under new head coach Jeff Brohm. He also became the special teams coach for the 2015 season.
Moving to Washington State
After a coach at Western Kentucky left, Shephard was offered a promotion. He could have become the offensive coordinator. However, he chose to take a different path. He joined Mike Leach's coaching staff at Washington State. There, he coached the inside wide receivers.
Time at Purdue
When Jeff Brohm became the head coach at Purdue University, Shephard joined him. He became the wide receivers coach and helped with the team's passing game. In 2018, he was promoted again. He became a co-offensive coordinator for Purdue.
Coaching at Washington
On January 12, 2022, it was announced that Shephard would join the Washington Huskies. He took on several important roles there. He was the associate head coach, passing game coordinator, and wide receivers coach.
Joining the Alabama Crimson Tide
On February 20, 2024, Shephard made another big move. He followed coach Kalen DeBoer from Washington to Alabama. At Alabama, he became the assistant head coach. He also became a co-offensive coordinator, working with Nick Sheridan. Plus, he continued to coach the wide receivers.
