What is Jabuk?
Jabuk started as a planned community around 1908. A local landowner, Mr. Cross from Wellington, set up this area. It was sometimes called a "private town" because it was developed by an individual, not the government.
The name of the town was officially changed from Marmon Jabuk to Jabuk on February 20, 1941. Later, in 1999 and 2000, official boundaries were set for Jabuk as a "locality." This means it's a defined area for local government.
Where Did the Name Jabuk Come From?
The name Jabuk probably comes from the nearby Marmon Jabuk Range. However, no one is completely sure how that range got its name. It might have come from an Afghan word used by camel drivers, or it could be an old word from the local Aboriginal people.
Jabuk's Location
The main part of Jabuk is in the middle of its locality. The Mallee Highway runs to the north of the town. To the south, you'll find the Pinnaroo railway line.
Community Life in Jabuk
Even though it's a small place, Jabuk has had several community buildings and sports areas.
There is a war memorial in Jabuk. There was also an institute, which is like a town hall, and a football oval. The town had tennis courts with lights and a playground for kids.
Sports and Clubs
Jabuk has a tennis club with a senior section for older players. The football oval is no longer used for games and is now farmed. The old clubrooms for the football team are now used by the Jabuk tennis team.
Churches in Jabuk
The Epiphany Lutheran Church was built in Jabuk, with its foundation stone laid on February 7, 1960. This church has been closed for a long time. There was also a Baptist church in the area, which is also no longer in use.
Government and Representation
Jabuk is part of different government areas in Australia.
For federal government elections, Jabuk is in the federal division of Barker. For state government elections in South Australia, it's in the state electoral district of Hammond. Locally, Jabuk is managed by two different councils: the Coorong District Council and the Southern Mallee District Council.
