John Crawford William MacBryan (born July 22, 1892 – died July 14, 1983) was an amazing English athlete. He was a talented cricketer who played for Cambridge University and Somerset. He even played one Test match for England.

But that's not all! MacBryan was also a fantastic field hockey player. He represented Great Britain and Ireland and won a shiny gold medal at the 1920 Olympic Games. Talk about being good at more than one sport!

Early Life and School Days

John MacBryan went to Exeter School when he was younger. He loved playing cricket there. In fact, he was so good that he became the captain of the school's cricket team in 1911.

After school, he joined the Somerset Light Infantry, which was a part of the army. In 1914, World War I began. John was involved in a battle and became a prisoner of war. He stayed a prisoner until the war ended.

University and Sporting Success

After the war, John went to Jesus College, Cambridge, a famous university. He continued to play cricket there. In 1920, he earned his "blue" for cricket, which is a special award for top athletes at Cambridge.

Cricket Career Highlights

John MacBryan was a right-handed batsman. He was known as an "amateur" player, meaning he didn't play cricket for money. After World War I, he became one of the best batsmen for the Somerset team.

In 1924, he was chosen to play in a Test match for England against South Africa. This was a huge deal! However, the match was ruined by heavy rain. John MacBryan never got to bat, bowl, or even catch anyone out. He spent a long time on the field, but the game was too wet to play properly. He is the only Test cricketer to have played in a match without doing any of those things! Sadly, he never got another chance to play for England.

Awards and Recognition

Even though his Test match was unusual, John MacBryan was a very respected cricketer. In 1925, he was honored as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year. This is a very important award in the world of cricket.
