Early Life and Beginnings
Growing Up in Mumbai
Jackie Shroff was born Jaikishan Kakubhai Shroff on February 1, 1957, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. His father, Kakubhai Haribhai Shroff, was from Gujarat. His mother was from Turkmenistan and had to leave her home country during a difficult time. She traveled with her family to Ladakh, then to Delhi, and finally settled in Mumbai.
Jackie's father came from a family of merchants, but they lost their money. His father had to leave home when he was 17. He met Jackie's mother when they were both teenagers and later got married.
School and Early Jobs
Jackie Shroff left junior college after finishing 11th grade because his family didn't have much money. He tried to become an apprentice chef at Taj Hotels and a flight attendant at Air India, but he wasn't accepted for either job because he didn't have enough qualifications.
He then started working as a travel agent. One day, someone from an advertising agency saw him at a bus stop and asked if he would be interested in modeling. This led to his first photo shoot for a suit shirt, which started his modeling career.
A teacher from an acting school, Aasha K Chandra, asked Jackie to join her classes. He wasn't sure at first, but when he heard that Dev Anand's son, Suneil Anand, was also attending, he decided to enroll. Suneil Anand introduced Jackie to his father, Dev Anand, who gave Jackie his very first acting role.
How He Got His Name
When he was a child, one of his school friends gave him the nickname "Jackie." Later, when filmmaker Subhash Ghai launched him in the movie Hero, he decided to keep the name "Jackie" for his screen name. Jackie Shroff still visits his childhood home in the Teen Batti area of Mumbai regularly.
