Playing Hockey
Starting with Brynäs IF
Jacob Markström signed a two-year contract with the Brynäs IF senior team in Sweden on May 12, 2008. He had played for their junior team before this. The next month, the Florida Panthers chose him as their first pick in the 2008 NHL draft. This was because he played very well in the Swedish Hockey League and for Sweden's national teams. He played in the Under 18 and World Junior tournaments.
In the 2009–10 season, Markström was a top goalie in the Swedish league. He had the best save percentage and lowest goals against average. On June 1, 2010, he signed his first NHL contract with the Panthers.
Time with the Florida Panthers
Markström played his first NHL game on January 23, 2011. He came into the game in the second period against the New Jersey Devils. He became the youngest goalie ever to play for the Panthers.
After his first NHL game, Markström was sent to the Rochester Americans. This team was Florida's minor league team in the AHL. The team wanted him to get used to playing hockey in North America. He had a tough first season in the AHL and also hurt his knee. After surgery, he worked hard to get back on the ice.
In September 2011, Markström competed for a spot on the Panthers' main team. He became the backup goalie when another player got injured. On October 22, Markström got his first NHL win. He played in the third period against the New York Islanders and stopped all 18 shots he faced.
During the 2012–13 NHL season, which was shorter due to a lockout, Markström started in the AHL. But when the main goalie got injured in March 2013, Markström became the team's main goalie for the rest of the season.
Moving to the Vancouver Canucks
Many thought Markström would be the Panthers' main goalie for the 2013–14 season. He signed a new two-year contract. However, the Panthers signed another goalie, so Markström was sent back to the AHL. On March 4, 2014, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks. He became the backup goalie for the Canucks.
Markström did not make the Canucks team at the start of the 2014–15 season. He was sent to the Utica Comets, the Canucks' AHL team. When the Canucks' main goalie got injured, Markström was called back up. He played a few games but struggled at first. On March 22, 2015, he got his first win of that season. He stopped 26 shots as the Canucks beat the Arizona Coyotes 3–1.
Markström signed a new two-year contract with the Canucks on June 29, 2015. He signed another three-year contract extension on July 7, 2016.
On December 5, 2017, Markström got his first NHL shutout. This means he stopped every shot and the other team scored zero goals. The Canucks won 3–0 against the Carolina Hurricanes.
On December 12, 2019, Markström had his fourth NHL shutout. He stopped 43 shots in a 1–0 win against the Hurricanes. This was one of the most shots stopped in a regular season game for a Canucks goalie. On January 3, 2020, Markström was chosen for his first NHL All-Star Game.
Playing for the Calgary Flames
On October 9, 2020, Markström left the Vancouver Canucks. He signed a six-year contract with the Calgary Flames. In the 2020–21 season, which was shorter because of the pandemic, he had 22 wins. He had a concussion during the season but it was not found right away. The Flames just missed making the playoffs that year.
For the 2021–22 season, Markström had the best season of his career. He had 37 wins and led the league with nine shutouts. He was nominated for the Vezina Trophy, which is given to the best goalie in the league. The Flames won their division and made it to the playoffs.
In the first round of the 2022 playoffs, the Flames played the Dallas Stars. Markström played very well, helping the Flames win in seven games. Then, the team faced the Edmonton Oilers in the second round. This was a big rivalry series. Markström did not play as well in this series, and the Flames lost in five games.
Joining the New Jersey Devils
On June 19, 2024, Markström was traded to the New Jersey Devils. The Flames kept part of his salary. On November 21, Markström played in his 500th NHL game. He made 20 saves as the Devils beat the Hurricanes 4–2.
