Peperomia rotundifolia, also known as jade necklace or trailing jade, is a cool trailing plant. It's a type of peperomia that grows naturally in the warm, wet rainforests of South America. A famous scientist named Carl von Linné first wrote about this plant.

About the Trailing Jade Plant

This plant has long, hanging stems. Its leaves are tiny, thick, and feel a bit squishy. These leaves are called succulent because they can store water. They look like small buttons and can even weave around each other!

Where the Trailing Jade Lives

The trailing jade plant is an epiphyte. This means it grows on other plants, like trees, but it doesn't harm them. It gets its water and nutrients from the air and rain.

You can find it in tropical forests in North America and South America. It also grows in rock cracks, on rotten logs, and even on the forest ground. This plant loves places that are moist and shady. It prefers warmer temperatures, usually above 30 °F (−1.1 °C).

Growing Your Own Trailing Jade

This plant looks great in hanging baskets. Its long stems can cascade down, making a beautiful display. It also does well in terrariums, which are like mini indoor gardens.

Caring for Your Plant

The trailing jade plant needs a lot of moisture in the air, especially when it's warm. However, be careful not to give it too much water. If you overwater it, the leaves might wilt or get bumpy spots. It likes soil that stays a little bit moist.

It's best if the plant is a bit "pot-bound." This means it likes its roots to be a little crowded in its pot. Don't put it in a pot that is too big.

How to Grow More Plants

You can easily grow new plants from leaf cuttings. Just take a small piece of a leaf or stem and plant it.

Sometimes, tiny bugs called mealybugs might try to live on your plant. If you see them, you can gently remove them to keep your plant healthy.
