Jagual's Past: A Brief History
Puerto Rico became a part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory. This means it is part of the U.S. but not a state, and it has its own government.
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,024 people lived in Jagual barrio at that time.
