A Look at Jagüitas' History
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Long ago, Puerto Rico was controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain and the United States signed a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government counted all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that Jagüitas and the nearby area of Hormigueros had a combined population of 965 people.

Understanding Barrios and Sectors
What are Barrios?
In Puerto Rico, a "barrio" is a type of local area, similar to a district or a large neighborhood. These barrios help organize the different parts of a town or municipality.
Smaller Areas: Sectors
Barrios are often divided into even smaller parts called sectores. These are like smaller neighborhoods or units within a barrio. The names for these smaller areas can be different. For example, some are called urbanización (which means a housing development), reparto, barriada, or residencial.
