What is Jahbulon?
The exact meaning and origin of the word Jahbulon are not fully known. Different groups and even experts who study Masonry have different ideas about what it means or where it came from.
Different Ideas About Its Meaning
One expert on Masonry believes the word was first used in the early 18th century. He thought it was the name of an explorer who was looking for King Solomon's Temple.
Another expert thinks it is a name for God in the Hebrew language.
The most common explanation from Masons themselves is that the word is made up of parts of God's name from different old languages. It combines sounds from names for God used in various historical cultures.
Why Jahbulon Caused Controversy
Some Writers who are not Masons, especially those who are critical of Masonry, have claimed that Jahbulon is a special "Masonic God." They said it was the name of a unique god only for Freemasons.
Freemasonry's Official View
However, officials from Freemasonry have clearly stated many times that "There is no separate Masonic God." They also say that no branch of Freemasonry has a special name for a deity (a god or goddess).
This idea that Jahbulon might be a "Masonic God" has caused many religious groups to argue about and criticize Freemasonry.
Changes in Rituals
In England, the word Jahbulon has not been officially used in Masonic rituals since February 1989. This change happened after a lot of strong criticism in the news. The Supreme Grand Chapter of England, a main Masonic group, removed the word from its Royal Arch ritual. They replaced it with other traditional names for God.
Stephen Knights, who wrote a book about Freemasons, suggests that Jahbulon might represent a combination of three ancient Middle Eastern gods:
- Jah: A name for God used by the Jews.
- Baal: A god from the Phoenicians.
- On: An Egyptian god.
