The Jaite Mill Historic District, also known simply as Jaite, is a special place in Ohio. It's a nationally recognized historic district, which means it's an area with important old buildings. You can find it in both Cuyahoga and Summit counties.

Part of Jaite is in Brecksville, and another part is in Sagamore Hills Township. This area was once home to the Jaite Company Paper Mill, built in 1903. Its main spot is where Vaughn and Riverview roads meet.

On May 21, 1979, this former company town was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places that are important to American history. Today, Jaite is a popular spot for hikers in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It's also on the way to the Boston Mills and Brandywine ski resorts.

History of Jaite Mill

The idea for the Jaite Company Paper Mill came from Charles Jaite. He started the company on September 18, 1905. This mill made paper products for many years. It kept working until 1951.

Why the Mill Closed

The mill was sold because it faced more and more competition. Other paper mills in the southern United States made it hard for Jaite to compete. After being sold to different owners, the mill stopped working.

In 1984, parts of the factory were taken apart. This happened about five years after the mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places. You can still see what's left of the factory. Look for it along the Erie Canal Scenic Pathway, around mile marker 19 or 20.

The Jaite Company Town

When the factory started to slow down, the community around it also changed. Charles Jaite bought land in 1906 and 1917. He wanted to build homes for the mill workers. This area became a small town.

The town had houses, a dormitory, a general store, a post office, and even a railway station. It was a complete community for the workers.

Jaite Today

Most of the original buildings in Jaite are still standing. They are often painted yellow. Some of these buildings are now used by businesses. However, most of them are used by the National Park Service. This means they help with the operations of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
