Jalen McDaniels was born in Seattle, Washington, and grew up in Federal Way, Washington. He went to Federal Way High School, where he played both basketball and football. In his final year of high school, Jalen was considered one of the top basketball players in the country.
He was chosen as a top player for Washington state's Class 4A. During his senior season, he averaged 19 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocked shots per game. His team, Federal Way, had an amazing undefeated season with a 29-0 record. They also won the Class 4A state championship that year.
College Basketball Career
Jalen McDaniels started his college career at San Diego State in 2016. He "red-shirted" his first year, which means he practiced with the team but did not play in games. This allowed him to train and get stronger without using up a year of his college playing eligibility.
In February 2018, he was named the Mountain West Conference player of the week. During his first season playing, he averaged 10.5 points per game. He started 21 out of 33 games for his team. In March 2018, Jalen thought about entering the 2018 NBA draft early. He even worked out for the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, he decided to stay at San Diego State for another year.
As a sophomore, Jalen played even better. He averaged 15.9 points and led his team with 8.3 rebounds per game. In March 2019, he decided to enter the 2019 NBA draft. He was one of 66 players invited to the NBA Draft Combine, where professional teams watch players perform.
Professional Basketball Journey
Starting with the Charlotte Hornets (2019–2023)
The Charlotte Hornets picked Jalen McDaniels as the 52nd player in the 2019 NBA draft. He signed a contract with the Hornets in October 2019. His contract was later changed to a "two-way contract." This type of contract allows a player to play for both an NBA team and its minor league team.
Jalen made his NBA debut on October 25, 2019. He scored two points and grabbed one rebound in a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He also spent time playing for the Hornets' minor league team, the Greensboro Swarm, in the NBA G League. On March 9, 2020, he scored a season-high 11 points for the Hornets.
On April 7, 2021, Jalen had a great game, scoring a season-high 21 points. He also had six rebounds, three assists, and two steals in a win against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
