Brigadier General James Brailsford Erwin (born July 11, 1856 – died July 10, 1924) was an important American soldier. He served in several major conflicts. These included the American Indian Wars and the Philippine–American War. He also took part in the Pancho Villa Expedition. During World War I, he led the 6th Infantry Division.

Early Life and Military Start

James Brailsford Erwin was born on July 11, 1856. His birthplace was Savannah, Georgia. He went to Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. After that, he joined the United States Military Academy. He graduated from West Point in 1880.

His first military job was as a second lieutenant. He was assigned to the 4th Cavalry. This unit was stationed at Fort Hayes. There, he served during the American Indian Wars. He later married Isabel Doan from St. Louis, Missouri.

Key Military Roles

From 1897 to 1899, James Erwin had a special job. He was the commanding officer of Fort Yellowstone. He also acted as the Superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. This meant he helped manage the park.

He then served in the Philippine–American War. This war lasted from 1899 to 1902. In 1906, a huge earthquake hit San Francisco. General Erwin was put in charge of the relief efforts. He helped people after the disaster.

Later, he served in the Pancho Villa Expedition. This took place from 1915 to 1916. His most significant role was during World War I. He led the 6th Infantry Division.

Awards and Retirement

General Erwin received two important awards for his service. He was given the Distinguished Service Medal. This award is for outstanding and important service. He helped organize and train the 6th Division. He also commanded the 12th Infantry Brigade. This was during battles in the Vosges Sector and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. His strong leadership helped his division succeed.

France also honored him with the Croix de guerre. This award recognizes brave actions in war.

General Erwin retired from the military on July 11, 1920. He passed away on July 10, 1924. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum in Saint Louis, Missouri.
