Playing in the NFL
James Burgess Jr. started his NFL journey in 2016. He was not chosen in the main draft but signed with the Miami Dolphins. This means he joined the team as an "undrafted free agent."
Early Career and Practice Squads
After signing with the Dolphins, Burgess spent time on their "practice squad." A practice squad is a group of players who train with the team but are not on the main roster. They can be called up if a main player gets injured.
Burgess moved between several practice squads in 2016. He was briefly with the San Diego Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, and Jacksonville Jaguars. These moves are common for players trying to earn a spot on an NFL team.
Cleveland Browns Years
In December 2016, Burgess joined the Cleveland Browns' practice squad. He later signed a full contract with them for the 2017 season. He played in 14 games for the Browns in 2017, starting in 9 of them. He made 75 tackles and had 4 sacks, which are good stats for a linebacker.
In 2018, he faced some injuries, including a sprained knee and a hamstring injury. These injuries kept him from playing in many games that season.
New York Jets and Other Teams
After his time with the Browns, Burgess returned to the Miami Dolphins practice squad in late 2018. In 2019, he joined the New York Jets. He played in 10 games for the Jets, starting all of them. He had a strong season with 78 tackles and half a sack. He also made an interception.
In 2020, Burgess briefly signed with the Atlanta Falcons practice squad. Soon after, he joined the Green Bay Packers' main roster. He played in 4 games for the Packers before being placed on injured reserve.
His last known NFL team was the San Francisco 49ers in 2021, but he was waived before the season started.
