James Charles Macnab of Macnab (born April 14, 1926 – died January 11, 2013) was known as The Macnab. He was the 23rd Chief of Clan Macnab, a historic Scottish clan. He was also a member of the Royal Company of Archers, which is a special bodyguard for the Queen in Scotland.

Early Life and Education

James Charles Macnab was born in London. His father was James Alexander Macnabb, who was considered the 21st Chief of Clan Macnab. James Charles went to school at Cothill House, Radley College, and Ashbury College in Ottawa, Canada.

His Career and Public Service

During the end of Second World War, from 1944 to 1945, James Macnab served in the Royal Air Force and the Scots Guards. In 1945, he became an officer (a Lieutenant) in the Seaforth Highlanders regiment.

Later, in 1948, he joined the police force in the Federation of Malaya (now part of Malaysia). He worked there until 1957. He then returned to the Seaforth Highlanders as a Captain from 1960 to 1964.

James Macnab also served his community as a Justice of the Peace (JP). This role means he helped with local legal matters, like signing documents and dealing with minor offenses. He was a JP for Perthshire and later for Stirling.

In Local Government

In 1961, he was elected to the Western Perthshire District Council, which is a local government body. He also served as a County Councillor for Perth and Kinross from 1964 to 1975. Later, he became a Member of the Central Regional Council from 1978 to 1982. These roles meant he helped make decisions for his local area. From 1982 to 1992, he worked as a consultant for a financial services company.

Family Life

In 1959, James Macnab married Diana Mary. They had two sons and two daughters together.

Becoming a Clan Chief

Being a clan chief means being the leader of a historic Scottish family or clan. The title of Chief is usually passed down through the family.

The story of the Macnab chiefs is quite interesting. In 1860, Archibald McNab, the 17th Chief, passed away. His daughter, Sarah Anne McNab, became the 18th Chief. After she died in 1894, there was a long time when it wasn't clear who the next chief should be.

After many years of research, a different branch of the family, called the Arthurstone Macnabbs, were able to show they were the rightful heirs. James William Macnabb of Arthurstone became the 19th Chief. His grandson, James Alexander Macnabb, was the 21st Chief.

However, in 1949, James Alexander Macnabb's uncle, Archibald Corrie Macnabb, bought back Kinnell House, which was part of the old Macnab family estate. In 1956, James Alexander Macnabb decided to let his uncle, Archibald Corrie Macnab, become the 22nd Chief. James Charles Macnab, the subject of this article, was then recognized as the person who would become chief after Archibald.

Challenges as Chief

In 1970, James Charles Macnab became the 23rd Chief of Clan Macnab after his great-uncle, Archibald Corrie Macnab, passed away. However, he faced high "death duties." These were large taxes that had to be paid when inheriting property. Because of these taxes, he had to sell Kinnell House and much of the family estate in 1978.

He continued to live in Finlarig, Killin, until 1985. Then, he moved to Fife after his wife's parents passed away. James Charles Macnab lived in Leuchars, Fife. His elder son, James William Archibald Macnab (born in 1963), became the 24th Chief of Clan Macnab when his father passed away.
