History of James City
James City was created during the American Civil War (1861-1865). During this war, the Union Army took control of nearby New Bern, North Carolina. They built a camp for freed slaves on land that belonged to a Confederate officer, Peter G. Evans.
- Early Name: At first, this camp was called the Trent River Settlement.
- New Name: By 1865, it was renamed James City. It was named after Horace James, a chaplain in the Union Army. He was in charge of helping formerly enslaved people and worked for the Freedmen's Bureau, an agency that helped freed slaves and refugees after the war.
Geography and Location
James City is located in the middle of Craven County. It sits on the west bank of the Neuse River, which is a large river affected by ocean tides.
- Borders: To the north, James City is next to the city of New Bern, North Carolina. The Trent River, which flows into the Neuse River, separates them. To the west, you'll find the community of Brices Creek.
