James David Hudnall (April 10, 1957 – April 9, 2019) was an American writer. He was best known for his work in the comic book world. James Hudnall started his career in 1986 with a series called Espers.

He later wrote for big comic companies like Marvel and DC. Some of his well-known comics include Alpha Flight and Strikeforce: Morituri. He also created his own series, Interface, which continued the story of Espers. James Hudnall also wrote longer comic stories called graphic novels, such as Lex Luthor: The Unauthorized Biography.

One of his comic series, Harsh Realm, was even made into a TV show in 1998. The show was created by Chris Carter, who also worked on The X-Files. James Hudnall and his co-creator, Andrew Paquette, had to go to court to make sure they got credit for their work on the show. They eventually won, and their names were added to the show's opening credits.

Early Life and Education

James Hudnall was born on April 10, 1957. His parents separated when he was two years old. His mother later married a man who was in the U.S. Navy. His family eventually settled in San Diego, California, in the 1970s.

After finishing high school at Point Loma High School, James Hudnall joined the U.S. Air Force in 1976. He was stationed in England for a time.

After the Air Force

After leaving the Air Force, Hudnall studied computer science at Coleman College in San Diego. He worked as a computer software consultant in different parts of California and briefly in England.

When he returned to the United States, he started reading comics again. This made him want to write, which had been a dream of his for a long time. He even tried to publish his own comic in 1982.

Comic Book Career

In 1985, James Hudnall began working for Eclipse Comics. He started as a marketing director. In 1986, his first comic book, Espers, was published.

From there, he went on to work for many major comic book companies. These included Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Image, Dark Horse, and Malibu.

Later Works

In the late 1990s, Hudnall shifted his focus to internet development. However, he still created some comics, like Trigs and 2 To the Chest. He also started writing for online blogs.

In 2012, he got involved in digital comics. He worked with David Lloyd on an online comic collection called Aces Weekly. In 2013, Hudnall released his first novel, The Age of Heroes: Hell's Reward. This was planned to be part of a series of books.

Health and Legacy

James Hudnall had diabetes. In 2015, this led to the amputation of his right leg. He passed away on April 9, 2019, just one day before his 62nd birthday.

Awards and Achievements

James Hudnall received several awards and honors for his work.

  • His graphic novel, Sinking, was nominated for an Eisner Award. This book was a fictional story about someone living with schizophrenia.
  • The Brazilian version of Lex Luthor: The Unauthorized Biography won the Troféu HQ Mix award in Brazil for best special edition.
  • In 2017, James Hudnall received the Inkpot Award at San Diego Comic Con International. This award celebrates people who have made great contributions to comics and other arts.
