Early Life and Education

James Hall was born on April 9, 1802. His hometown was Cornish, New Hampshire. He learned to be a doctor by studying with Dr. Nathan Smith. Later, he went to the Medical School of Maine. James Hall earned his medical degree in 1822.

He worked as a doctor in New Hampshire and Vermont. In 1829, he got a health problem called rheumatism. This made him lose some use of his left leg. For the rest of his life, he needed to use a crutch and a cane. He also spent some time in the West Indies.

Founding Maryland-in-Africa

In 1831, James Hall sailed to Liberia in West Africa. He went with a group of people who wanted to start a new life there. For two years, he worked as a doctor in the colony. After that, he returned to the United States.

In 1833, a group called the Maryland State Colonization Society asked Hall for help. They wanted him to start a new colony in Liberia. This new colony was at a place called Cape Palmas. James Hall successfully started the colony of Maryland-in-Africa.

He became the governor of this new colony. He served as governor from October 1833 until July 1836. After his time as governor, he went back to the United States. He continued to work with the Maryland State Colonization Society. He also worked with the American Colonization Society.

The colony that Hall founded became independent in 1854. However, it later joined with Liberia in 1857. In 1877, Hall gave important papers about the Maryland State Colonization Society to the Maryland Historical Society.
