Sir James Milne Wilson (born 29 February 1812 – died 29 February 1880) was an important leader in Tasmania. He served as the Premier of Tasmania from 1869 to 1872. A Premier is like the head of the government for a state or territory.

About James Milne Wilson

James Milne Wilson was born in 1812 in Banff, Scotland. His father, John Wilson, was a shipowner. James studied in Banff and Edinburgh.

In 1829, he moved to Tasmania. There, he learned about engineering. He also worked as an officer on a ship.

His Career

Wilson worked at the Cascade Brewery for 14 years. He eventually became its manager. This was a big step in his career.

In 1859, he started his political journey. He became a member of the legislative council for Hobart. This council helps make laws for Tasmania.

In 1863, he joined the government led by James Whyte. He was a minister without a specific department.

Leading Tasmania

In 1868, Wilson was the Mayor of Hobart. This was when the Duke of Edinburgh visited Tasmania.

On 4 August 1869, he became the Premier of Tasmania. He also served as the colonial secretary. His time as Premier lasted until November 1872.

A writer named Anthony Trollope visited Australia in 1871. He thought highly of Wilson. Trollope said Wilson was a very good politician.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1872, Wilson was chosen as the President of the Tasmanian Legislative Council. He held this important position until he passed away.

He died on 29 February 1880. This was his 68th birthday. It's a rare coincidence because he was born on a leap day. This means he was a leapling.

In 1847, he married Deborah Hope. She was the daughter of Peter Degraves. Wilson was knighted in 1873. He received the K.C.M.G. honor in 1878.

Wilson was very popular and known for his kindness. He helped many charities. He was also involved in farming and horse racing.

As a politician, he believed in free trade between the Australian colonies. This meant countries could trade without extra taxes. Tasmania passed a free trade law in 1870 during his time as Premier.
