James Lee Pattinson (born May 3, 1990) is an Australian cricket player. He is known as a strong and fast bowler. James played Test and limited-overs cricket for the Australian national team. However, his time playing was often limited because of back injuries.

About James Pattinson

Early Life and Club Cricket

James Pattinson grew up in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. He went to Haileybury (Melbourne) school. His older brother, Darren Pattinson, also played cricket, even for the England team in one Test match.

James started his cricket career playing for the Dandenong Cricket Club. He also played for the Australian Under-19 team in the 2008 World Cup held in Malaysia. In 2009, he set a new record for Victoria in a List A match, taking six wickets for only 48 runs.

Pattinson played for several club teams around the world. He was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2013 Indian Premier League, but he couldn't play due to health issues. Later, in 2020, he joined the Mumbai Indians for the 2020 Indian Premier League and became a regular player. In March 2021, he reached a big milestone, taking his 300th wicket in first-class cricket.

Playing for Australia

Pattinson joined the Australian One Day International (ODI) team in April 2011 for a tour in Bangladesh. He made his ODI debut in the final match of that series. He then joined the Australian Test squad for a tour in Sri Lanka later that year, but he didn't get to play a Test match then.

Test Matches

James Pattinson made his Test debut on December 1, 2011, against New Zealand in Brisbane. He had an amazing start, taking 5 wickets for just 27 runs in the second part of the game. This helped Australia win by nine wickets. He continued to play well, taking five more wickets in the next Test. Because of his excellent performance, he was named the "Man of the Series."

In his very next Test match, the 2011 Boxing Day Test against India, he again won the "Man of the Match" award. He took 6 wickets in the match and also scored 55 runs.

In March 2013, Pattinson returned to the Australian team after recovering from an injury. He took another 5 wickets in a Test match against India. However, before the third Test against India, Pattinson was dropped from the team for disciplinary reasons. This decision surprised many former players.

Pattinson returned to the Australian Test team in December 2015 for a series against the West Indies. In his first match back, he took 5 wickets for 27 runs, matching his best bowling figures. He also changed his bowling style to gain more control and speed, even though it carried a risk of re-injuring his back.

In April 2019, Pattinson received a national contract from Cricket Australia. In July 2019, he was chosen for Australia's team for the 2019 Ashes series in England. He played in the first and third Tests of that series, which were his first Test matches since February 2016.

One Day and T20 Matches

Pattinson was also part of Australia's squad for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. He played in ODI and T20I matches for Australia, showing his skills in different forms of the game.

Retirement

In October 2021, James Pattinson announced that he was retiring from Test cricket. This decision came before the 2021–22 Ashes series. He had been dealing with a knee injury, which, along with other past injuries, had limited how many Test matches he could play throughout his career.
