Playing Cricket
Darren Pattinson was born in England but grew up in Australia. He started playing cricket for the Dandenong Cricket Club. In the 2006–07 season, many bowlers on the Victorian team got hurt. This led to Darren being picked to play for them.
In January 2007, he played his first major professional match against South Australia. He took four wickets, which means he got four opposing batsmen out. After playing well, he signed a contract to play for Victoria in 2007–08.
Darren also worked as a roof-tiler. To focus more on cricket, he signed a two-year contract with Nottinghamshire in England. He started playing for them in 2008. In his first match for Nottinghamshire, he took five wickets. He then took six wickets in another match against Lancashire.
A Surprising Call-Up for England
On 3 July 2008, Darren Pattinson was chosen for England's 30-player squad. This was for a big international tournament called the ICC Champions Trophy. A couple of weeks later, he was asked to join England's team for a Test match against South Africa. This was because another player, James Anderson, needed cover.
The very next day, another player, Ryan Sidebottom, couldn't play due to a back injury. This meant Darren Pattinson was chosen to play his first ever Test match for England! This was a huge step for him. Before this match, he had only played in 11 first-class games. His selection was a big surprise to many people in the cricket world.
Darren's First Test Match
In his first Test match against South Africa at Headingley, Darren Pattinson batted at number 11. He scored 8 runs. Then, he started bowling for England alongside James Anderson.
On the second day of the match, he got his first Test wicket. He got Hashim Amla out. Later, he also got Ashwell Prince out. Darren finished the innings with two wickets for 95 runs from 30 overs. South Africa scored a lot of runs, reaching 522 in total.
When England batted again, Darren scored 13 runs. He helped his teammate Stuart Broad add 61 runs for the last wicket. This meant South Africa had to bat again to win the game. South Africa eventually won the match by ten wickets.
After His Test Match
After his one Test match, Darren Pattinson went back to play for Victoria in Australia. He wasn't always chosen to play, as his younger brother, James, was often preferred. However, when other fast bowlers got injured, Darren was often picked for the team.
He returned to England in 2010 to play for Nottinghamshire again. That season, Nottinghamshire won the County Championship, which is a major cricket competition. Darren played a big part, taking 31 wickets. He was also the team's best wicket-taker in the T20 format that year.
In the 2010–11 Australian season, Darren had his best bowling performance ever. He took 8 wickets for only 35 runs against Western Australia.
About Darren's Life
Darren Pattinson's younger brother, James, is also a famous cricketer. James has played Test and One Day International (ODI) cricket for Australia. Darren has two daughters named Sophie and Olivia.
