James Pearson was an Irish soldier. He received the Victoria Cross (VC). This is the highest award for bravery in the face of the enemy. It is given to soldiers from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries.
He was born on October 2, 1822. James Pearson was 35 years old when he earned his VC. He was a Private in the 86th (Royal County Down) Regiment of Foot. This regiment later became The Royal Irish Rifles.
A Heroic Soldier: James Pearson
James Pearson served in the British Army. He fought during the Indian Mutiny. This was a major conflict in India. His brave actions took place in 1858.
His Incredible Bravery
On April 3, 1858, a fierce battle happened at Jhansi. Private Pearson showed amazing courage during this fight. He bravely faced several armed rebels. Even though he was wounded, he kept fighting.
Later, at a place called Calpee, he showed even more bravery. He risked his own life under heavy gunfire. He went to rescue his wounded friend, Private Michael Burns. Sadly, Michael Burns later died from his injuries. James Pearson's actions were truly heroic.
What Happened Next?
After these brave deeds, James Pearson continued his military career. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He lived until January 23, 1900.
