James R. Barnett, Sr. (born May 31, 1842 – died January 20, 1917) was an American doctor, banker, and politician. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served for two years in the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the northern part of Winnebago County.

James R. Barnett's Early Life
James R. Barnett was born on May 31, 1842. This was in the town of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, which is now part of Waukesha County, Wisconsin. When he was young, he moved to Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. There, he worked as a school teacher for two years. This was just before the American Civil War began.
Serving in the Civil War
In the summer of 1862, James Barnett joined the Union Army. He became a private in Company I of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment. He fought with this group for the rest of the war. During his service, he was promoted to sergeant and then to first sergeant. As the war ended in July 1865, he was named a first lieutenant. However, he was never officially given this rank.
Becoming a Doctor and Community Leader
After the war, Barnett went to Rush Medical College. He finished his studies and graduated in 1868. He then moved to Neenah, Wisconsin, where he worked as a doctor for 45 years.
Besides being a doctor, James Barnett was very involved in his community. He was the superintendent of schools. He also served on the Neenah board of education. He was a leader among local doctors. He even became president of the state medical society. Later, he also became the president of the Neenah State Bank.
Time in Politics
In 1908, James Barnett was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly. He ran as a Republican. He served one term in this role. He decided not to run for re-election in 1910.
He passed away at his home in Neenah on January 20, 1917. He had been ill for about a month.
James R. Barnett's Family Life
James Barnett married Emma G. Scribner soon after he finished medical school. They had at least two children together. Their son, James Jr., also became a medical doctor in Neenah, following in his father's footsteps.
