James Scholefield (born November 15, 1789 – died April 4, 1853) was an important English scholar. He was an expert in ancient Greek and Latin. He was born in a town called Henley-on-Thames in England.

Early Life and Education

James Scholefield went to school at Christ's Hospital. This was a famous boarding school. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. He worked very hard there.

Becoming a Professor

In 1825, James Scholefield became a professor. He taught Greek at Cambridge University. This was a very important job. He helped many students learn about ancient Greek.

Life in the Church

Scholefield also worked in the church. He was a curate, which is like an assistant priest. He worked for Charles Simeon, a well-known church leader. From 1823 until he died, he was the main priest at St Michael's Church in Cambridge. Later, he also became a canon at Ely.

A Great Teacher and Scholar

James Scholefield was known as an excellent teacher. His students even called him "Duke Scholefield." They gave him this nickname because he was strong and had wide shoulders. He helped make learning fun.

He worked on many important books. He edited a book called Adversaria by PP Dobree. Dobree was the Greek professor before him. Scholefield also worked on plays by famous ancient writers. These included Aeschylus and Euripides.

One of his successful books was Hints for an improved Translation of the New Testament. This book helped people understand the Bible better. In 1824, he helped test students in the first Classical Tripos. This was a big exam for students studying ancient languages.

His Legacy

James Scholefield died on April 4, 1853, in Hastings. To remember his work, a special award was created. It is called the Scholefield Theological Prize. This prize is given at Cambridge University. It started in 1856.
