James Vincent Stanton (born February 27, 1932) is an American politician. He served as a U.S. Representative for Ohio. This means he was elected to represent people from Ohio in the United States Congress.
James V. Stanton's Early Career
James Stanton began his career in public service in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. From 1959 to 1970, he was a member of the Cleveland city council. The city council helps make important decisions for the city.
He even served as the president of the city council from 1964 to 1970. This was a very important leadership role.
Serving in the U.S. Congress
In 1971, James Stanton was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He represented Ohio's 20th congressional district.
He served three terms in Congress, from January 3, 1971, to January 3, 1977. During this time, he worked on laws and issues important to his district and the country.
Later Political Activities
In 1976, James Stanton decided not to run for re-election to the House of Representatives. Instead, he tried to become a candidate for the United States Senate. He was not successful in winning his party's nomination for that election.
Even though he lost, he supported the person who won the primary election, Howard Metzenbaum. This shows how politicians often work together after a tough election.
Years later, in the 2012 election, James Stanton supported Mitt Romney. Romney was a Republican candidate for president. This was interesting because Stanton himself was a Democrat.
