History of Jamestown
The town of Jamestown was started in 1826. It was created to be the main town, or county seat, for the new Russell County.
How Jamestown Got Its Name
For a short time, the town was called Jacksonville. This was to honor General Andrew Jackson. He had won the most votes in the 1824 presidential election. However, he did not win the election in the end. This was because of a political deal.
Later that same year, a different political group came into power. They were loyal to Henry Clay. In November, the town's post office was named Jamestown. This name came from a local landowner named James Wooldridge. He and his brother John had given 110 acres of land for the town. The state government officially made the city's name Jamestown in December, and it has been called that ever since.
