Jamieson Lee Greer (born in 1979 or 1980) is an American lawyer and a veteran of the United States Air Force. He is set to become the 20th United States trade representative in 2025. This important role is part of the second Trump administration.
Greer is a member of the Republican Party. Before his new role, he worked for the first Trump administration. From 2017 to 2020, he was the chief of staff for the United States Trade Representative. He is also a partner at a law firm called King & Spalding, where he specializes in international trade.
Early Life and Education
Jamieson Greer finished high school in 1998 at Paradise High School in Paradise, California. After that, he spent two years as a Mormon missionary in Brussels, Belgium.
He then went to Brigham Young University. There, he studied international relations. Greer continued his education by earning master's degrees from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University and Sciences Po. Later, he attended the University of Virginia School of Law. In 2007, for a few months, Greer worked as a law clerk for the European Court of Justice.
Military Service
From 2008 to 2012, Greer served as an officer in the United States Air Force. He was part of the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps, which means he was a lawyer for the Air Force.
During his service, he was stationed in Kansas and Turkey. He was also sent to Iraq, where he was in charge of military justice. Greer was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 2012.
Professional Career
After his time in the military, Jamieson Greer worked for private law firms. These firms focused on trade law, including Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He once represented a company called U.S. Steel in a legal case against China. Currently, he is a partner at King & Spalding, where he works on international trade issues.
From 2017 to 2020, Greer served as the chief of staff for the trade representative, Robert Lighthizer. In this role, Greer was involved in important trade talks with China. He also participated in discussions to change the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico.
In November 2024, President-elect Donald Trump announced his plan to choose Greer for the role of United States Trade Representative. Greer is the first Mormon to hold a Cabinet-level position since Mike Leavitt in 2009. The Senate Committee on Finance approved his nomination on February 12 with a vote of 15 to 12. On February 26, the full United States Senate confirmed his nomination by a vote of 56 to 43.
Views on Trade
Jamieson Greer believes in having stronger economic policies towards China. He supports strictly enforcing the trade deal that came from the China–United States trade war. He also thinks the U.S. should use export controls and sanctions against China.
Greer supports making trade deals with other countries. These include the United Kingdom, Kenya, the Philippines, and India. He sees these deals as a way to balance China's economic influence. He also wants to help bring back manufacturing jobs to the United States.
