Jameel Jalibi (Urdu: جمیل جالبی) was a famous Pakistani linguist, critic, writer, and scholar. He was an expert in Urdu literature and the study of languages. He also served as the Vice-Chancellor (head) of the University of Karachi.

Early Life and Education
Jameel Jalibi was born Mohammad Jameel Khan on June 12, 1929. His family, the Yusufzais, lived in Aligarh, which was part of British India at the time. He went to school in Aligarh.
He finished high school in Saharanpur. Later, he earned his first university degree, a Bachelor of Arts, from Meerut College.
Moving to Pakistan
Just one day before India and Pakistan became separate countries, on August 13, 1947, Jalibi moved to Karachi, Pakistan. He continued his studies and writing there.
He earned several more degrees from Sindh University. These included a Master of Arts in English in 1949 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1950. He later earned his Ph.D. in 1971 and a higher doctorate, the DLitt, in 1973.
Early Career
From 1950 to 1953, he worked as a headmaster at Bahadur Yar Jang School in Karachi. In 1953, he passed the Central Superior Services exams. These exams help people get important government jobs in Pakistan. He then joined Pakistan's Income Tax Department and worked there until he retired.
Career and Literary Work
In 1983, Jameel Jalibi became the Vice-Chancellor of Karachi University. He led the university until 1987. After that, he became the Chairman of the Muqtadara Quami Zaban. This organization is also known as the National Language Authority. It works to promote and develop the Urdu language.
Writing and Editing
Jalibi was also involved in publishing. In 1949, he worked as an assistant editor for Payam-i-Mashriq. This was an Urdu weekly newspaper published in Karachi.
From 1950 to 1954, he was a co-editor for an Urdu monthly magazine called Saqi. He wrote a regular column for it called Baatein. He also started his own quarterly magazine, Naya Daur.
Research and Books
Jalibi did a lot of research on the history of Urdu literature. He wrote five large books about it, titled Tareekh-e-Adab-e-Urdu. These books cover the history of Urdu literature from the 15th to the 20th centuries.
He wrote more than 40 books in total. These books covered topics like criticism, research, and culture. He also wrote short stories especially for children.
Awards and Recognition
Jameel Jalibi received many important awards for his work. These awards recognized his great contributions to Urdu language and literature.
- Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Crescent of Distinction) Award in 1994. This award was given by the President of Pakistan.
- Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Star of Distinction) Award. This was also given by the President of Pakistan.
- Baba-i-Urdu Maulvi Abdul Haq Award (National Literary Award) in 2006. This award came from the Pakistan Academy of Letters.
- Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Order of Excellence) in 2021. This was given by the President of Pakistan after his death.
The Pakistan Academy of Letters published a special book about his achievements. It was called Dr Jameel Jalibi: Shakhsiat aur Fun.
On August 14, 2021, the Chief Minister of Sindh opened the Dr Jameel Jalibi Research Library. A special teaching position, the Dr Jameel Jalibi Chair, was also announced at the University of Karachi. These honors recognized his important work for the Urdu language.
Death
Jameel Jalibi passed away on April 18, 2019, in Karachi, Pakistan. He is survived by his four children: two daughters and two sons.
