Jamrud (also called Jam) is a town in the Khyber District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It is located in the Valley of Peshawar, right next to the city of Peshawar. Jamrud is known as the "doorway" to the famous Khyber Pass.
The Khyber Pass is a very important mountain pass. It connects Jamrud with Landi Kotal to the west. This area is close to the border of Afghanistan. For a long time, Jamrud has been a key spot on the trade routes between Central Asia and South Asia. It has also been a very important military location. The town sits about 461 meters (1,512 feet) above sea level. The historic Jamrud Fort is located about 17 kilometers (11 miles) west of Peshawar city.

History of Jamrud
Jamrud has a rich history, especially because of its important location. Many events have taken place here over hundreds of years.
The Battle of Jamrud
A famous battle, called the Battle of Jamrud, happened here. It was fought between the Sikh Empire and the Durrani Empire. During this battle, a brave Sikh general named Hari Singh Nalwa was killed. The Sikh forces were defeated in this fight.
Building the Jamrud Fort
The famous Jamrud Fort was built very quickly. Hari Singh Nalwa decided to build it. He laid the foundation on December 18, 1836. The fort was finished in just 54 days, on February 10, 1837. Hari Singh Nalwa's grave is still next to the fort today.
British Control and Strategic Importance
The British Empire took control of the Jamrud Fort in 1849. This happened after they took over the Punjab region and ended the Sikh Empire. The British signed a treaty with Dost Mohammad Khan. This agreement helped them control the Khyber Pass.
Jamrud became a very important military base for the British Indian Army. It was used during the time of the British Raj. In 1857, an important agreement called the Second Anglo-Afghan Treaty was signed here. The British army often used Jamrud as a starting point for their wars in Afghanistan.
During military actions in 1878-79, Jamrud became even more important. It was the main outpost on the British border towards Afghanistan. It also served as a base for a part of the Tirah campaign in 1897-1898. Jamrud was also the headquarters for the Khyber Rifles. This group collected tolls from people using the Khyber Pass.
Jamrud Today
Today, Jamrud is still a very important place. It is the headquarters of the Frontier Corps. This is a branch of the Pakistan Army. In 1901, the population of Jamrud was 1,848 people. By 2017, the population had grown to 63,843. Jamrud continues to be a key location due to its history and geography.
