Bishop Jan Niemiec (Ukrainian: Ян Нємєц; Polish: Jan Niemiec) was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in Poland on March 14, 1958. He later became a bishop in Ukraine.
Bishop Niemiec served as an Auxiliary bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kamyanets-Podilskyi. This means he helped the main bishop in that area. He was also known as the Titular Bishop of Decoriana. He held these roles from October 21, 2006, until he passed away on October 27, 2020.
His Early Life and Studies
Jan Niemiec grew up in a Roman Catholic family in Eastern Poland. After finishing school, he went to the High Pedagogical School in Rzeszów from 1977 to 1982.
He then decided to study to become a priest. He attended the Major Theological Seminary in Przemyśl from 1982 to 1987.
Serving as a Priest
On June 24, 1987, Jan Niemiec was ordained as a priest. This happened after he finished his studies in philosophy and theology.
For five years, from 1987 to 1992, he worked as an assistant priest in different parishes in Poland. During this time, he also continued his studies at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin.
In 1992, Father Niemiec moved to Ukraine. There, he began working in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kamyanets-Podilskyi. He became a professor at the Major Theological Seminary in Horodok. He also served as a prefect from 1992 to 2001 and then as the rector (head) of the seminary from 2001 to 2007.
In 1998, he earned a special degree called a Doctor of Science from the Institute for the History of Science, Polish Academy of Sciences.
Becoming a Bishop
On October 21, 2006, a very important event happened for Father Niemiec. Pope Benedict XVI chose him to become an Auxiliary Bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kamyanets-Podilskyi. He was also named the Titular Bishop of Decoriana.
On December 8, 2006, he was officially made a bishop. This special ceremony is called a consecration. Cardinal Marian Jaworski and other church leaders performed the ceremony. It took place at the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul in Kamianets-Podilskyi.
Later Years and Legacy
On April 12, 2007, Bishop Niemiec was given another important role. He was appointed as a Vicar General for the same diocese. This meant he had even more responsibilities in helping to manage the diocese.
Bishop Jan Niemiec passed away on October 27, 2020, at the age of 62. He died in a hospital in Łańcut, Poland. He had been transferred there from a hospital in Kamyanets-Podilskyi, Ukraine, a few days earlier.
