Jan Jacobus Wouters (born 17 July 1960) is a Dutch football coach and former player. He played as a defensive midfielder, which means he helped protect his team's goal. In 1990, he was named the Dutch Footballer of the Year, a big award for the best player in the Netherlands.

Playing Career: A Midfield Star
Jan Wouters played for several famous football clubs during his career. These included Utrecht, Ajax, Bayern Munich, and PSV. He was known for his strong play in the midfield.
He was also a very important player for the Netherlands national team. He played 70 matches for his country and scored four goals. Jan Wouters was a key part of the team that won the 1988 European Football Championship (Euro 1988). This was a huge victory for Dutch football!
During a World Cup qualifying match in 1993, Jan Wouters was involved in an incident with English player Paul Gascoigne. Gascoigne got a fractured cheekbone and had to wear a special mask to protect his face. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, which made it harder for England to qualify for the 1994 World Cup.
Coaching Career: From Player to Mentor
After his playing days, Jan Wouters became a football coach. He worked as an assistant coach for many teams. He was an assistant at Scottish Premier League club Rangers for several years. He also worked as an assistant coach at PSV and Utrecht.
Sometimes, he took over as a temporary (caretaker) manager. He was the main coach for Ajax for a short time and later for Utrecht. More recently, he has been an assistant coach for the youth teams at Ajax, helping to train the next generation of football stars.
