Playing Career
Dick Advocaat was born in The Hague, Netherlands. As a player, he was a tough defensive midfielder. He started his career at 18 with his hometown club, ADO Den Haag. In 1968, he won his only major trophy as a player, the KNVB Cup.
After playing for ADO Den Haag, he joined Roda JC in 1973. He later played for VVV-Venlo. In 1978, he moved to the United States to play for the Chicago Sting in the North American Soccer League.
He returned to the Netherlands to play for Sparta Rotterdam and later finished his playing career at FC Utrecht. In total, he played over 500 professional games.
Coaching Career
While still playing, Advocaat also worked as a physical education teacher. He started coaching an amateur team in 1981. His big break came in 1984 when he became an assistant coach for the Netherlands national football team under the legendary Rinus Michels.
Early Coaching Jobs
Advocaat's first job as a manager of a professional club was with HFC Haarlem in 1987. He then moved to SVV, where he led the team to win the second division title and get promoted to the top league, the Eredivisie.
Netherlands National Team and PSV
In 1992, Advocaat became the head coach of the Dutch national team. He led the team to the quarter-finals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where they narrowly lost 3-2 to Brazil, the eventual champions.
After the World Cup, he became the manager of PSV, one of the biggest clubs in the Netherlands. With star players like Ronaldo and Luc Nilis, he won the KNVB Cup in 1996 and the Eredivisie league title in 1997.
Rangers F.C. in Scotland
In 1998, Advocaat became the first foreign manager of the Scottish club Rangers. He spent a lot of money on new players and had great success.
In his first season, Rangers won the "domestic treble," which means they won the league title, the Scottish Cup, and the League Cup all in the same year. The next season, they won the league again by a huge 21-point margin. However, his third season was less successful, and he left the club in December 2001.
Return to International Management
Advocaat returned to manage the Netherlands national team in 2002. He led them to the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2004. However, he was criticized by the media for his tactics, and he quit after the tournament.
He then had short spells managing German club Borussia Mönchengladbach, and the national teams of the United Arab Emirates and South Korea. He managed South Korea at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Success with Zenit Saint Petersburg
In 2006, Advocaat became the manager of the Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg. This was one of the most successful times in his career.
In 2007, he led Zenit to win their first Russian league title. The following year, he guided them to victory in the UEFA Cup, beating his old club Rangers in the final. Later that year, they also won the UEFA Super Cup by defeating Champions League winners Manchester United.
More Coaching Jobs
After leaving Zenit in 2009, Advocaat had many more coaching jobs. He managed the national teams of Belgium, Russia, and Serbia. He led Russia to the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament.
He also managed several clubs, including AZ Alkmaar and a return to PSV in the Netherlands.
Sunderland in the Premier League
In March 2015, Advocaat was hired to manage Sunderland in the English Premier League. The team was in danger of being relegated (sent down to a lower league).
Advocaat helped the team win important games and they managed to stay in the Premier League. He was so emotional after securing their safety that he was seen in tears. He left the club at the start of the next season.
Recent Years
Even after announcing his retirement several times, Advocaat's love for football kept bringing him back. He managed Turkish club Fenerbahçe and had a third spell as the manager of the Netherlands national team in 2017.
He has also managed Sparta Rotterdam, FC Utrecht, and Feyenoord in his home country. In 2021, he had a brief time as the coach of the Iraq. In January 2024, he took on a new challenge as the head coach of the Curaçao national football team.
