Jane Elizabeth Clarke is an English writer who creates amazing books and poems for children. She was born in 1954. Some of her most famous books are Gilbert the Great and Neon Leon.
Jane has written more than 80 books! This includes the popular Dr. Kittycat series. Her books are even used in schools to help kids learn to read. You might have heard her stories on CBeebies Bedtime Stories. Famous people like Dolly Parton and Jake Wood have read her books Stuck in the Mud and Knight Time. Stuck in the Mud was even released with a special audio CD in the US!
Jane also helps write for other popular book series for young readers. These include Dinosaur Cove, Puddle the Naughtiest Puppy, and Pet Hotel.

Jane's Early Life and Education
Jane Clarke grew up in a town called Kettering in England. She was born there on December 17, 1954. She went to Hawthorn Road County Primary School and Kettering High School for Girls.
After high school, Jane went to the University of Birmingham. There, she studied archaeology and history. Later, she continued her studies in archaeology at University College London.
Jane's Family and Career Journey
In 1977, Jane married Martin Clarke. Martin was a chemical engineer, and his job took their family to many different countries. They lived in places like Mexico, Brazil, the United States, Wales, and the Netherlands.
Jane and Martin had two sons, Andrew and Robert. Both of their sons went to the Antwerp International School in Belgium. They later went to university in the UK.
While living in the Netherlands, Jane started working as a librarian at the Antwerp International School. This is where she began her exciting career as a children's author!
Sadly, Jane's husband Martin passed away in 2001. In 2005, Jane moved back to Kent, England, where she lives today.
Besides writing, Jane loves to visit schools all over the UK and Europe. She inspires children to enjoy reading and writing. She also supports charities like Ellenor Lions Children's Hospice and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

- Gilbert the Great was highly praised at the Sheffield Children's Book Award in 2006.
- It also won a Bronze Star at the Norfolk Library and Information Service Children's Book Award in 2006.
