Early Life and Education
Jane Colburn Levy was born in Los Angeles, California. Her mother, Mary, was an artist and florist, and her father, Lester, was a musician. She has an older brother named Simon. When Levy was a baby, her family moved to San Anselmo, a town in northern California, where she grew up.
In high school, Levy was very active. She was on the hip hop dancing team and was the captain of the school's soccer team. She started playing soccer when she was only five years old.
After high school, Levy went to Goucher College in Maryland for a year. She even played on the college's soccer team. However, she decided that college wasn't the right path for her at the time. She chose to follow her passion for acting instead. She moved to New York City and enrolled in the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, where she completed her training.
Acting Career
After studying acting in New York for two years, Jane Levy moved back to Los Angeles to start her career.
First Roles and TV Stardom
In 2011, Levy got her first TV role as Mandy Milkovich in the show Shameless. Soon after, she landed the lead role of Tessa Altman in the TV comedy Suburgatory. The show was about a teenager from New York City who moves to the suburbs. Because she was the star of Suburgatory, another actress took over her role in Shameless. Suburgatory was on TV for three seasons before it was canceled in 2014.
Levy quickly became a rising star. Both TV Guide and TheInsider.com called her one of the breakout stars of 2011. Forbes magazine included her on its "30 under 30" list, which highlights young people who are making a big impact in their fields.
Moving into Movies
While starring on Suburgatory, Levy also began acting in movies. In 2012, she appeared in Fun Size and Nobody Walks.
Her biggest movie role at the time came in 2013. She starred as Mia in the horror film Evil Dead, a new version of a classic horror movie. The following year, she acted in the independent films About Alex and Bang Bang Baby. In 2015, she appeared in the movie Frank and Cindy.
Recent Work
In 2016, Levy worked again with Evil Dead director Fede Álvarez on the horror movie Don't Breathe. In the film, she played a young woman who breaks into a blind man's house. The movie was a surprise hit, earning great reviews and making over $156 million worldwide. That same year, she also starred in the family-friendly action movie Monster Trucks.
Levy has continued to work in both movies and television. In 2017, she appeared in the film I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore and had a role in the TV series Twin Peaks. She also starred in the show There's... Johnny!.
In 2018, she starred in the horror-fantasy series Castle Rock, which is based on stories by Stephen King. From 2020 to 2021, she played the main character in the NBC show Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. In the show, her character, Zoey, can hear people's secret thoughts as songs.

Jane Levy married actor Jaime Freitas in 2011. They separated later that year, and their marriage ended in 2013.
