Janusz Bolonek (born December 6, 1938 – died March 2, 2016) was a Polish leader in the Catholic Church. He worked as a diplomat for the Holy See, which is the government of the Catholic Church. He became an archbishop in 1989. He represented the Holy See in several countries, including Uruguay, Bulgaria, Romania, and North Macedonia.

Biography
Early Life and Education
Janusz Bolonek was born in Huta Dłutowska, Poland. This was on December 6, 1938. He studied to become a priest at a local seminary. He was ordained as a priest on December 17, 1961. This ceremony took place in Łódź, Poland.
To prepare for a career in diplomacy, he joined a special school in 1967. This school was called the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. He also studied at two important universities in Rome. These were the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Lateran University.
Diplomatic Career
Serving the Pope
Janusz Bolonek's first jobs in the diplomatic service were in different countries. He worked in Nicaragua, the United States, and Egypt. He also worked at the Secretariat of State in Rome. This is a very important office in the Vatican.
While there, he helped plan Pope John Paul II's trips to Poland. These trips happened in 1983 and 1987. He also worked on a group that helped restore diplomatic relations between Poland and the Holy See. This meant re-establishing official connections between the two.
Ambassador for the Holy See
On September 25, 1989, Pope John Paul II gave him a new role. He was named an archbishop. He also became the Pope's representative, or "pro-nuncio," to Côte d'Ivoire. He received his special blessing as a bishop from Pope John Paul II on October 20. On November 18, 1989, he also became the pro-nuncio to Niger and Burkina Faso.
Later, on January 23, 1995, he was named the Pope's ambassador to Romania. On September 30, 1998, he was assigned to work directly for the Secretariat of State in Rome.
On November 11, 1999, Pope John Paul II named him the ambassador to Uruguay. In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him ambassador to Bulgaria. This was on May 24, 2008. He also took on duties as ambassador to North Macedonia on May 4, 2011. He retired from his diplomatic work on December 6, 2013.
Janusz Bolonek passed away on March 2, 2016.
