Jason Ringenberg (born November 22, 1958) is an American musician. He is a singer-songwriter and plays the guitar. Jason is best known as the lead singer of the band Jason & the Scorchers. This band had popular songs like "Golden Ball and Chain." They also made a rock version of Bob Dylan's "Absolutely Sweet Marie."

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Jason Ringenberg was born in Kewanee, Illinois. He grew up in a town nearby called Sheffield, Illinois. His parents owned a hog farm there. The farm was right next to the Rock Island Railroad tracks.

While studying at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Jason started playing music. He joined different bands. These bands played rock, alternative rock, and country music.

Jason's Music Career

In 1981, Jason Ringenberg moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Soon after, he started his band, Jason & the Scorchers. The other members were Warner Hodges, Jeff Johnson, and Perry Baggs. Their music was a cool mix of punk rock and country sounds.

The Scorchers' Impact

The band became very popular with critics. They released several albums and performed live shows. The magazine Rolling Stone said they "singlehandedly re-wrote the history of rock'n'roll in the South."

Jason Ringenberg was very important in the 1980s. This was when indie country/rock music was growing. His band's music helped create new types of music. These included alternative country and Americana genres.

In 2008, Jason & the Scorchers received a special award. The Americana Music Association gave them the Lifetime Achievement Award. This award was for their amazing performances.

Jason's Solo Work

Jason Ringenberg has also done well as a solo artist. He has released five solo albums. He also tours and performs by himself. The Times newspaper in London called him "one of the most exciting performers of his generation."

Today, Jason performs in two ways. He performs as himself, Jason Ringenberg. He also performs as his children's music character, Farmer Jason. Sometimes, he even performs as both on the same day!

Meet Farmer Jason

Jason Ringenberg created his character, Farmer Jason, in 2002. He wanted to entertain his own daughters. In 2003, he released his first children's album. It was called A Day at the Farm with Farmer Jason. The album came out on the Yep Roc Records label.

Farmer Jason is very popular. It has become the most successful project of Jason's career. As Farmer Jason, he sings songs about farm animals. He also sings about how much he loves nature.

Farmer Jason even has a mini-show on PBS. It's called "It's a Farmer Jason." This show has been nominated for four Emmy awards. It even won one Emmy award! He has recorded four albums and a DVD as Farmer Jason. His fourth album, Christmas on the Farm with Farmer Jason, came out in December 2014.

Stand Tall Album

Jason's album Stand Tall came out in 2019. He wrote many of these songs while he was an Artist in Residence. This was at Sequoia National Park. The album was recorded in Southern Illinois and Nashville. The songs on the album are about many different things. They include stories about John the Baptist and the band The Ramones.

Jason's Personal Life

Jason Ringenberg lives near Bon Aqua, Tennessee. He lives there with his wife, Suzy. They have three daughters: Kelsey, Addie, and Camille. They also have many animals on their farm!
