A Look Back in Time
How Jauca 1 Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico was once controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
Counting the People in Jauca 1
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Jauca 1 and a nearby barrio called Jauca 2 had a combined population of 1,553 people.
