A Look Back: Jauca 2's History
How Jauca 2 Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a territory that belongs to the U.S. but is not fully part of it, like a state.
Early Population Counts in Jauca
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Jauca 2 and a nearby neighborhood called Jauca 1 had a combined population of 1,553 people.
