Javed Akhtar: Cricket Player and Umpire
Javed Akhtar was born in Delhi, which was part of British India at the time. He grew up to become a significant figure in Pakistani cricket. His career showed his dedication to the sport, first as a player and then as an official.
Playing Cricket: His Early Career
Javed Akhtar was a right-arm off spinner. This type of bowler spins the ball to make it curve away from a right-handed batsman. He played in one special Test match for Pakistan in 1962. Test matches are the longest and most challenging form of cricket.
Before playing for his country, Javed Akhtar had a very successful career in first-class cricket. This level of cricket involves matches that last several days. He played 51 first-class matches, showing his skill and consistency.
Success as a Bowler
In first-class cricket, Javed Akhtar was excellent at taking wickets. He managed to get 187 batsmen out. His bowling average was 18.21 runs per wicket, which is a very good score for a bowler. He took five wickets in a single innings 12 times and even took ten wickets in a match three times. His best bowling performance was taking 7 wickets for only 56 runs.
However, his only Test match was a bit tougher. He bowled 96 balls but didn't manage to take any wickets in that game. Even so, playing in a Test match is a huge achievement for any cricketer.
Becoming an Umpire: A New Role
After his playing career, Javed Akhtar continued his involvement in cricket by becoming an umpire. Umpires are like referees in other sports; they make sure the game follows the rules. This role requires deep knowledge of cricket and fair judgment.
Officiating International Matches
Javed Akhtar became a well-known international umpire. He stood in 18 Test matches and 40 One Day International (ODI) matches. ODIs are shorter, one-day games. He served as an umpire from 1980 to 1999, which means he was involved in top-level cricket for nearly two decades. His long career as an umpire showed his commitment to the sport and his ability to make fair decisions.
