Javine Dionne Hylton (born on December 27, 1981), known simply as Javine, is an English singer and songwriter. She became famous after appearing on the TV show Popstars: The Rivals. Javine represented the United Kingdom at the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv with her song "Touch My Fire". Her version of "You've Got a Friend" was also the main song for the movie Garfield: The Movie in 2004.

Early Life and First Steps in Music

Javine Hylton was born in Kensington, London, and grew up in Ladbroke Grove. From a young age, she loved to dance. She once said, "I didn't like singing. I started stage school at 10, because at my normal school, there were always fights. So I thought, what do I want to do? I want to dance."

For two years, Javine played the character Nala in the musical The Lion King in London's West End. After her time in the show, she started writing songs and decided to become a singer.

Joining Popstars: The Rivals

Javine tried out for the TV show Popstars: The Rivals. This show looked for young singers to form a new music group. She made it to the final six contestants who were hoping to join the girl group. However, she did not get a spot in the group, which later became the very successful band Girls Aloud. Instead, Javine decided to start her own solo singing career.

Music Career Highlights

In the summer of 2003, Javine released her first song, "Real Things". This song used a part of M.O.P.'s song "Ante Up". "Real Things" reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming her biggest hit.

After this, she had three more songs from her first album that made it into the Top 20. These were "Surrender (Your Love)", "Best of My Love", and a song called "Don't Walk Away". This last song was released with another song, "You've Got a Friend", which was originally by Carole King.

Her Album Surrender

Javine's first album, Surrender, came out in the summer of 2004. Even though she worked with famous songwriters and producers, and her songs did well, the album itself only just made it onto the UK Albums Chart. Because of this, her record label decided to stop working with her in late 2004.

Javine also worked with DJ Richard X on his 2003 album. Their song together, "You Used To", was planned to be a single but was never released. In late 2003, she was an opening act for the American rapper Nelly during his tour in the UK.

In October 2013, Javine released a song called "Never" with DJs WAWA and M.A.R.K. This song was very popular with music critics.

Eurovision Song Contest 2005

On March 5, 2005, Javine won Eurovision: Making Your Mind Up. This was the UK competition to choose who would represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2005. She sang her song "Touch My Fire", which she helped write.

During her performance, there was a small issue with her dress. Despite this, Javine went on to represent the UK in the Eurovision final in Kyiv. She was reportedly suffering from a throat infection during the final. She finished in 22nd place with 18 points. When "Touch My Fire" was released as a single, it became her fifth song to reach the Top 20, getting to number 18 in the UK Singles Chart.
