Javonte Green, born on July 23, 1993, is a professional basketball player from the United States and Montenegro. He recently played for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before joining the pros, Green played college basketball for the Radford Highlanders.

Javonte Green's Early Life
Green was born in Petersburg, Virginia. He lived there until he was 12 years old. Then, he moved to Alberta, Virginia, to live with his aunt. He went to Brunswick High School in Lawrenceville. There, he played basketball for coach Bryant Stith, who used to play for Virginia and in the NBA.
High School Basketball Success
In his senior year, Green was a star player. He scored about 18.6 points per game. He also grabbed 5.8 rebounds and made 3.1 steals per game. Green led his team, the Bulldogs, to win the VHSL Group AA Division 3 state title. He was named first team All-State. He was also chosen as the Virginia Co-Player of the Year.
Choosing College and Other Sports
Green decided to play college basketball at Radford University. This was the only NCAA Division I school that offered him a scholarship. Besides basketball, Green also played football at Brunswick High. He was the starting quarterback during his junior and senior years. He even received a scholarship offer to play football at James Madison University.
College Basketball Career
Javonte Green played for the Radford Highlanders for four seasons. He became a starter in his first year. As a freshman, he averaged 10.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. He was named to the Big South Conference's All-Newcomer team.
Growing as a Player
In his second year, Green led the Highlanders in scoring and rebounding. He averaged 14.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. He was named Second Team All-Big South. As a junior, he was named First Team All-Big South. He averaged 16.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.9 steals. He also set a school record with 68 steals in one season.
Senior Year and School Records
In his senior year, Green continued to excel. He averaged 15.4 points, nine rebounds, and 1.9 steals. He was again named First Team All-Big South. He also won the conference's Defensive Player of the Year award. Green finished his college career as Radford's all-time leader in rebounds (1,064) and steals (245). He also played in the most games (133). He was second in school history with 1,911 points. To honor his achievements, Radford University retired his number 2 jersey on November 28, 2021.
Professional Basketball Journey
After college, Javonte Green was not chosen in the 2015 NBA draft. However, he soon began his professional career overseas.
Playing in Spain
On September 11, 2015, Green signed with Marín Peixegalego in Spain. This team played in the third division, LEB Plata. In his first professional season, Green was outstanding. He averaged 18 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game. He was named the LEB Plata's Most Valuable Player.
Time in Italy
Green then moved to Italy. On July 11, 2016, he signed with Pallacanestro Trieste in the Italian second division, Serie A2 Basket. In the 2016–17 season, he averaged 15.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.4 steals in 45 games. He played a second season with Trieste, averaging 18.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, and a league-leading 2.3 steals per game. After this, he was invited to play for the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Summer League.
Playing in Germany
On July 25, 2018, Green signed with ratiopharm Ulm in Germany. This team plays in the Basketball Bundesliga. Green averaged 13.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game. He played in 51 games, including league and EuroCup games. He was chosen to play in the 2019 BBL All-Star Game for the "International" team.
Joining the Boston Celtics
Green was invited to play for the Boston Celtics in the 2019 NBA Summer League. He played well, averaging 10.8 points and 4.8 rebounds. On July 25, 2019, the Celtics signed him to a two-year contract. After a strong preseason, Green made the Celtics' final roster for the 2019–20 season.
NBA Debut and First Points
Green made his NBA debut on October 25, 2019, against the Toronto Raptors. This made him the first player from Radford University to play in an NBA game. He scored his first NBA points on November 7, 2019, against the Charlotte Hornets. He finished that game with 12 points. On February 3, 2020, Green made his first NBA start against the Atlanta Hawks. In August 2020, he had surgery on his right knee and missed the playoffs. His son was born the day after his surgery.
Playing for the Chicago Bulls
On March 25, 2021, Green was traded to the Chicago Bulls as part of a three-team trade. The Bulls re-signed him on August 19, 2021. In January 2023, Green had another knee procedure. He returned to play a few games in March 2023.
Time with Santa Cruz Warriors
On October 16, 2023, Green signed with the Golden State Warriors, but was waived a few days later. On October 30, he joined the Santa Cruz Warriors, a team in the NBA G League.
Return to Chicago Bulls
On March 23, 2024, Green signed a 10-day contract to return to the Chicago Bulls. On April 4, he signed with them for the rest of the season. On April 5, Green had his best NBA game. He scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a 108–100 win against the New York Knicks.
New Orleans Pelicans and Cleveland Cavaliers
On August 22, 2024, Green signed with the New Orleans Pelicans. In February 2025, he and the Pelicans agreed to end his contract. A few days later, on February 23, 2025, Green signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
International Basketball Career
Javonte Green is a citizen of both the United States and Montenegro. He started playing for the Montenegro national basketball team in 2017. This was during the qualifiers for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. In two games, he averaged 11 points, 4.5 rebounds, and four steals.
