Jay Dee Daugherty (born March 22, 1952) is an American drummer and songwriter. He is most famous for his work with the legendary musician Patti Smith. As a key member of the Patti Smith Group, he has been nominated twice for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Jay Dee Daugherty's Early Career
Jay Dee Daugherty moved to New York City in 1974. There, he helped start a band called Mumps with his high school friends, Lance Loud and Kristian Hoffman.
In 1975, he began playing drums with Patti Smith. Before joining her band, he even helped out as her sound engineer for a short time. When Patti Smith was recovering from an injury, Jay Dee helped a music writer named Lester Bangs form a band. He also helped produce some early music for other New York City bands.
Working with Many Musicians
After the Patti Smith Group stopped performing together in 1979, Jay Dee Daugherty continued to be very busy. He toured and recorded with Tom Verlaine on all his solo music projects.
He also played with many other artists, including Willie Nile and The Roches. He even sat in with famous musicians like Billy Idol and Mark Knopfler.
A casual jam session with Mike Scott from The Waterboys turned into a long-term collaboration. Jay Dee recorded and toured extensively with The Waterboys during their popular Fisherman's Blues period.
Joining the Indigo Girls and The Church
Fans of the Patti Smith Group, the Indigo Girls, asked Jay Dee Daugherty to play on their second album. This album, titled Indigo Girls, won a Grammy Award and sold millions of copies.
Later, Jay Dee moved to Sydney, Australia. From 1990 to 1993, he was a member of the Australian rock band The Church.
Jay Dee Daugherty Today
Since Patti Smith started performing again in 1995, Jay Dee Daugherty has continued to play with her. He is a musician, co-writer, and co-producer for her projects.
He also forms the main band for the yearly Tibet House US benefit concerts at Carnegie Hall. He plays alongside Lenny Kaye and Tony Shanahan at these special events.
