Jay Dee Daugherty (born on March 22, 1952) is an American drummer and songwriter. He is best known for his work with the famous musician Patti Smith. As a member of the Patti Smith Group, he has been nominated twice for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Early Life and Career
Jay Dee Daugherty moved to New York City in 1974. There, he helped start a band called Mumps with his high school friends, Lance Loud and Kristian Hoffman.
In 1975, Jay Dee began playing drums with Patti Smith. Before joining her band, he even worked as her sound man for a short time.
Working with Other Artists
After the Patti Smith Group broke up in 1979, Jay Dee Daugherty worked with many other musicians. He toured and recorded with Tom Verlaine on all his solo projects.
He also played with artists like Willie Nile and The Roches. He even sat in with famous musicians such as Billy Idol, Mark Knopfler, and Joey Ramone.
A jam session with The Waterboys' Mike Scott led to a long-lasting partnership. Jay Dee recorded and toured a lot with The Waterboys, especially during their Fisherman's Blues period.
Fans of the Patti Smith Group, the Indigo Girls, asked Jay Dee to play on their second album. This album, called Indigo Girls, won a Grammy Award and sold millions of copies.
From 1990 to 1993, Jay Dee Daugherty lived in Sydney, Australia. During this time, he was a member of the Australian rock band The Church.
Return to Patti Smith
Since 1995, Patti Smith has been performing again. Jay Dee Daugherty has continued to play with her. He is a musician, co-writer, and co-producer for her work.
He also forms the house band for the yearly Tibet House US benefit concerts. These concerts take place at Carnegie Hall and he plays alongside Lenny Kaye and Tony Shanahan.
