Jay Hosler is a cool author and artist who creates science comics! He's famous for his graphic novels like Clan Apis, The Sandwalk Adventures, and Optical Allusions.

Clan Apis won an award and tells the funny story of a honey bee named Nyuki. You learn real facts about honey bees as Nyuki grows up. The Sandwalk Adventures was nominated for an award. It's about a chat on evolution between Charles Darwin and a tiny mite in his eyebrow. Optical Allusions helps explain how eyes and vision developed. It follows the story of a character called Wrinkles the Wonderbrain.

Besides writing, Jay Hosler is also an entomologist, which means he studies insects. He is a Biology Professor at Juniata College.

About Jay Hosler

Jay Hosler grew up in Huntington, Indiana. He finished college at DePauw University in 1989. Later, he earned his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Notre Dame in 1995. He also worked as a researcher studying honey bees at Ohio State University.

How Jay Started Drawing Comics

Jay Hosler didn't go to art school. But he loved reading comics when he was a kid. He says he was "always a doodler." He drew comic strips for his college newspaper at DePauw. At Notre Dame, he even got paid to draw a daily comic strip for the student paper.

He first combined his love for science and comics in 1997. That's when he published his comic Cow-Boy.

Teaching with Comics

As a professor at Juniata College, Hosler has found many ways to mix comics with teaching. He created Clan Apis and The Sandwalk Adventures to help people learn science. He also received money from the National Science Foundation to create Optical Allusions. This book is a mix of comics and a regular textbook. It teaches about how vision and senses evolved.

Hosler believes that new ways of teaching are important. He has said that student scores in science are dropping. He thinks we should try new and different methods to help students learn better. He even taught a class called "Comics and Culture" with a history professor.

Jay Hosler is married to Lisa, and they have two sons, Maxwell Scott and Jack DeMoss.

Jay Hosler says that early comic artists like Steve Ditko, Stan Lee, and Jack Kirby first got him interested in comics. Later, he was inspired by artists such as Gary Larson, Bill Watterson, Jeff Smith, Linda Medley, and Larry Marder.
