Randy "Jay" Jackson, born on October 27, 1987, is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played for several teams in Major League Baseball (MLB). These teams included the San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays, and Minnesota Twins.
Jay Jackson also played in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in Japan. There, he was a part of the Hiroshima Toyo Carp and Chiba Lotte Marines. Before turning professional, Jackson played college baseball at Furman University. The Chicago Cubs chose him in the 2008 Major League Baseball draft.

Early Life and College Baseball
Jay Jackson grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. He went to Christ Church Episcopal School. After high school, he continued his education and played baseball at Furman University. His skills on the mound caught the attention of professional scouts.
Starting His Professional Career
The Chicago Cubs picked Jay Jackson in the ninth round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft. This was the 281st player chosen overall. He began his professional journey in the minor leagues.
- Chicago Cubs: Jackson started with the Low-A Boise Hawks. He also played for the Single-A Peoria Chiefs and the High-A Daytona Cubs. He had a good start with a 2.88 ERA in 13 games. Over the next few years, he played for different Cubs minor league teams. These included the Double-A Tennessee Smokies and the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. He pitched many innings and gained valuable experience. The Cubs released him in April 2013.
- Miami Marlins: Soon after, Jackson signed with the Miami Marlins organization. He played for their Double-A Jacksonville Suns and Triple-A New Orleans Zephyrs teams. He pitched well, striking out 93 batters in 104⁄2 innings. He became a free agent in November 2013.
- Pittsburgh Pirates: In late 2013, Jackson joined the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played for their Triple-A team, the Indianapolis Indians. He had a 5–4 record in 25 games.
- Milwaukee Brewers (First Time): In August 2014, the Pirates traded Jackson to the Milwaukee Brewers. He finished the season with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds. After the season, he became a free agent again.
Making It to Major League Baseball
- San Diego Padres: In January 2015, Jackson signed with the San Diego Padres. He started the year in Double-A with the San Antonio Missions. Later, he moved up to the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas. On September 14, 2015, Jay Jackson made his big league debut. He pitched for the Padres against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He played in six MLB games that year.
Playing in Japan: Hiroshima Toyo Carp
After his time with the Padres, Jay Jackson decided to play baseball in Japan.
- Hiroshima Toyo Carp: In December 2015, he signed with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). He had a very successful time in Japan. In 2016, he appeared in 67 games. He had a great 1.71 ERA and struck out 89 batters. He continued to pitch well for the Carp in 2017 and 2018.
Back to MLB: Milwaukee Brewers and More
After his successful time in Japan, Jackson returned to Major League Baseball.
- Milwaukee Brewers (Second Time): In February 2019, Jackson rejoined the Milwaukee Brewers. He started in Triple-A with the San Antonio Missions. He was called up to the major leagues in April 2019. He played in 28 games for Milwaukee that year.
- Chiba Lotte Marines: In December 2019, Jackson went back to Japan. He signed with the Chiba Lotte Marines of NPB. He played in seven games for the Marines in 2020. He left the team in July 2020.
- Cincinnati Reds: In August 2020, Jackson signed a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds. However, he did not play in any games for the Reds. This was because the minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- San Francisco Giants: Jackson signed with the San Francisco Giants in January 2021. He started with their Triple-A team, the Sacramento River Cats. He pitched very well, not allowing any runs in 11 innings. He was called up to the Giants' main roster in July 2021. He finished the season with a 2–1 record and a 3.74 ERA in 23 games.
- Atlanta Braves: In November 2021, Jackson was traded to the Atlanta Braves. He was placed on the injured list in March 2022. He returned in July but only made two appearances for Atlanta. He pitched 1⁄1 scoreless innings.
- Toronto Blue Jays: Jackson signed with the Toronto Blue Jays in January 2023. He later re-signed with them in March. He had a strong season for Toronto, appearing in 25 games. He recorded a 2.12 ERA with 27 strikeouts.
- Minnesota Twins: In February 2024, Jackson signed a contract with the Minnesota Twins. He played in 17 games for the Twins. He was designated for assignment in May, but later returned to the active roster in June. He made two more appearances before being designated for assignment again. He was released by the Twins in July 2024.
Retirement from Baseball
- Bravos de León: In February 2025, Jackson signed with the Bravos de León of the Mexican League. However, in March 2025, Jay Jackson announced his retirement from professional baseball.
Jay Jackson's Family Life
Jay Jackson is a father to two sons. In July 2023, his youngest child was born early. His son stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for 166 days. This is a special unit for babies who need extra care. His son was able to go home after this long stay.
