Jon Ferguson "Jay" Mohr (born August 23, 1970) is an American actor, stand-up comedian, and radio host. He is well-known for his roles in TV shows and movies.
On television, he played Peter Dragon in the comedy series Action (1999). He was also Professor Rick Payne in Ghost Whisperer (2006–2008) and the main character in the sitcom Gary Unmarried (2008–2010). Before that, he was a cast member on the famous NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live from 1993 to 1995.
Jay Mohr has also appeared in many films. His first big movie was Jerry Maguire (1996). Other movies include Picture Perfect (1997), Small Soldiers (1998), Pay It Forward (2000), and Air (2023).
Besides acting, Mohr hosts his own podcast called Mohr Stories. He also hosted a daily sports radio talk show, Jay Mohr Sports, on Fox Sports Radio for a time. He was even nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for hosting and producing Last Comic Standing (2003–2006).

Early life and beginnings
Jay Mohr was born in Verona, New Jersey. His mother, Iva Jean, was a nurse, and his father, Jon Wood Mohr, worked in marketing. He has two sisters, Julia and Virginia. His family has Scottish roots.
He went to Verona High School and graduated in 1988. While in high school, he was part of the wrestling team and was its captain in his final year. After high school, he started acting in local theater plays.
Career highlights
Acting roles
Jay Mohr started his TV career by hosting the lip-sync game show Lip Service on MTV. This show even won him a CableACE Award.
He then joined the cast of Saturday Night Live for two seasons (1993–1995). He wrote a book, Gasping for Airtime: Two Years in the Trenches of Saturday Night Live, about his time on the show and how he learned to manage challenges like anxiety.
Mohr's first big movie role was in 1996 as Bob Sugar, a sports agent, in Jerry Maguire. The next year, he starred with Jennifer Aniston in Picture Perfect. In 1999, he played Peter Dragon in the TV series Action. He also lent his voice to Fox Sports Net's Beyond the Glory.
He appeared in other movies like Are We There Yet?, Small Soldiers, and Pay It Forward. Jay Mohr was once offered a late-night talk show, but he chose to host a sports talk show on ESPN called Mohr Sports, which ran for a short time in 2001. The late-night show he turned down later became Jimmy Kimmel Live! with Jimmy Kimmel.
From 2003 to 2004, Mohr created and hosted NBC's Last Comic Standing, a reality television show where comedians compete. He was also an executive producer for the show and received an Emmy nomination. He later had a regular role on the TV series Ghost Whisperer. He also appeared in an episode of Scrubs and three episodes of The West Wing.
Mohr starred as Gary Brooks, a newly divorced father, for two seasons on the CBS sitcom Gary Unmarried. In 2010, he played Billy in Clint Eastwood's movie Hereafter. He also made a guest appearance on NBC's Outlaw.
He will also star in an upcoming comedy movie called Discussion Materials.
Radio and podcasts
Jay Mohr has often appeared on The Jim Rome Show and sometimes filled in as a guest host.
On January 2, 2013, he started hosting his own daily talk show, Jay Mohr Sports, on Fox Sports Radio. This show was heard on many internet platforms and local radio stations. In November 2014, his show moved to a different time slot.
Mohr also hosts his own podcast, Mohr Stories. He first started it on the SModcast Network and later moved it to his own network, Fake Mustache Studios.
Other projects
In June 2004, Jay Mohr released his first book, Gasping for Airtime: Two Years in the Trenches of Saturday Night Live. This book shared his experiences during his two years on Saturday Night Live. In May 2010, he released his second book, No Wonder My Parents Drank: Tales from a Stand-Up Dad.
His comedy album, Happy. And A Lot, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2016.
Since 2013, Mohr has hosted the NASCAR Cup Series Awards Ceremony in Las Vegas. In 2016, he became the host of the Los Angeles Rams pregame show on KABC-TV.
Personal life
Jay Mohr has a son named Jackson from his first marriage to Nicole Chamberlain. They were married for six years.
He later married actress Nikki Cox on December 29, 2006. In 2008, he legally changed his name to Jon Ferguson Cox Mohr, adding his wife's last name. Their son, Meredith Daniel Mohr, was born on May 5, 2011. Jay Mohr and Nikki Cox divorced in August 2018.
Mohr began dating Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss in 2017. They got engaged in December 2022 and were married on September 3, 2023.
