About Jay Whiss
Early Life and Music Start
Jay Whiss was born in 1992. His mother is Irish and his father is from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. He was an only child and was raised by his single mother. They moved to St. Lawrence, Toronto when he was very young. Jay Whiss lived in many different places as he grew up. He says he had a normal childhood, playing hockey and soccer.
When he was 11, he moved to another part of the city. But he still spent time in The Esplanade area of Toronto. He went to many high schools but left before finishing. Jay Whiss says no one in his family was a musician. However, his mother worked part-time at HMV and brought home many music CDs. This made him love music. He remembers his father telling him, "you know the lyrics to every song but don't do your homework." His early music heroes include Ludacris, Missy Elliot, The Notorious B.I.G., and Jay Z. He also looked up to Canadian artists like Solitair, Kardinal Offishall, and Point Blank.
Beginning His Career: 2011–2015
Jay Whiss decided to start rapping in the summer of 2010 when he was 17. He wanted to express himself through music. He released his first song, "Chasing a Dream," on January 3, 2011. He was 18 at the time. He then released "2011 Til Infinity" on February 6 of the same year. Both songs had music videos directed by Tristan Prime, who is a friend of the Prime Boys group. These early songs did not get much attention.
In 2013, Jay Whiss and his group, Prime Boys, started to get noticed in their local area of St. Lawrence. They became known across Canada with their song "I Heard," released in November 2014. Jimmy Prime, a key member of Prime Boys, helped make "The Six" a popular nickname for Toronto. Many rappers, including Drake, now use this term. Jimmy Prime released his mixtape Block Boy in July 2015. Jay Whiss was featured on the song "Best One."
In September 2015, record label manager Oliver El-Khatib noticed Jay Whiss. He added Whiss's song "Imagine Us" to Episode 5 of OVO Sound Radio. In November 2015, Whiss released the song "Watch This." It had a music video directed by Tristan Prime. The video included his friends Jimmy Prime, Donnie, and Safe. He then released "Need it all," which featured Jimmy Prime. This song was later added to Episode 42 of OVO Sound Radio.
Koba World: 2016–2018

But a few months later, he released the song "Driven," which featured Safe. The song "Full Circle" came out in September 2016. It featured Donnie, Puffy L'z, Smoke Dawg, Safe, and Jimmy Prime. This song showed a new supergroup forming in Toronto. It included all three Prime Boys and three members of the Halal Gang. The song quickly became very popular, getting over a million views in a year. This group was called the "all-star team" of Toronto street rap. "Full Circle" was also played on OVO Sound Radio, on Episode 34.

Sadly, Smoke Dawg and Koba Prime, who was Prime Boys' assistant manager, were killed in June 2018. The death of Koba Prime led to the Prime Boys changing their album name to Koba World as a tribute. Whiss said that "names never die, and their names always live on." The album was officially released on July 27, 2018. It included the songs "Hold Me Down" and "Sopranos."
