Becoming Mayor
In 2022, Jaylen Smith ran for mayor of Earle, Arkansas. He was a candidate for the Democratic Party. He won the election with 235 votes. His opponent, Nemi Matthews, received 185 votes.
Smith officially became mayor on January 3, 2023. Because he was 18 when he won, he became the youngest Black mayor in U.S. history. He also became one of the youngest mayors of any background in the United States.
What Mayor Smith Wants to Do
As mayor, Jaylen Smith has several important goals for Earle. He wants to make the city safer for everyone. He also aims to improve how people get around, like roads and transportation.
